The computer is an essential item in society today. Books can now be read online, research can be done at home rather than having to go to a distant library. There are myriad reasons why the computer is still being used today and why it will continue to technologically advance. The first computer, which is similar to the one used today, was designed by a British mathematician Charles Babbage between 1833 and 1871. Before this computer, there was vigorously a person who used to add and subtract numbers and put them into tables, and these tables were eventually found in books, which helped the people. Charles Babbage is considered the “father of the computer” and is responsible for inventing the first mechanical computer. This computer was needed by the people for completing everyday tasks such as: calculating taxes, doing research, reading the news, and so much more. Eventually, the computer became more advanced and it is one of the many technological items people greatly rely on today.
The computer is made up of many parts, which are the following: the CPU, the GPU, the RAM, the motherboard, and the hard drive. The Central Processing Unit, also known as the CPU, is the powerhouse of the computer. Without the CPU, the computer would not run. Its electronic circuits are the ones that carry out daily tasks the computer has to go through, for example, if one wants to create a program, the central processing unit is the part of the computer that will help to create it. It does the job of doing arithmetic, logic, and other beneficial and salient tasks that one needs. The reason it is called the processing unit is to help distinguish it from the fact that it is not related to the memory of the computer or a few other things. As time went on and technology advanced, the central processing unit kept getting more and more powerful in doing daily tasks.
The GPU is a device with a set of specific hardware capabilities that are
intended to map well to the way that various 3D engines execute their code,
including geometry setup and execution, texture mapping, memory access, and
shaders. Which, in layman terms, means that it is the part of the computer that shows the video aspect of the PC. If one was to play a video game, it is the GPU that does the job and portrays it. Even watching youtube videos, it is all the job of the GPU. Without it, anything related to video and 3D scaling would not be shown. There’s a relationship between the way 3D engines function and the way
GPU designers build hardware. Nvidia first coined the term “GPU” with the launch of the original GeForce 256 and its support for performing hardware transform and lighting calculations on the GPU (this corresponded, roughly to the launch of Microsoft’s DirectX 7). The GPU I have right now is actually made by NVIDIA.
The Random Access Memory, also known as RAM, is also one of the main components of the computer as without it the computer would not run fast at all. It is just as important in many other devices as well such as phones, laptops, etc. One would need it as well just so they can run an application in general, meaning without it, the application would not run. RAM temporarily stores all the information in the computer. In order for the computer to run, it will look into the RAM for the necessities so that it would run fast. This is really different from the hard drive as the hard drive stores the information for a very long time.
The motherboard is not the same as the CPU as its job is to organize the computations that are performed. All motherboards have a heatsink, which is basically a device that absorbs and transfers the heat out, this way the motherboard would stay cool at all times. The motherboard is what connects the GPU, the CPU, the RAM, and the hard drive to the computer that it would run, which is why it has many slots and other sorts of pins for connection. Motherboards did, in fact, upgrade for the better as time went on, new ports were made for greater power, different connections were made for the DPU and the GPU that the pc would need for it to run fast and to its full potential.
Last but not least, the hard drive. Well, this is basically the computer, as, without it, the computer would not have anywhere to store the information you are asking for. It holds all the information long term, as well as the computer’s code needed for the outputs. If I were to say computer storage, I would be talking about the hard drive as it is the part of the computer that stores it all. In my computer I have 1TB of storage and about 20-30 GB is used on the computer’s information, the rest is for other things that I might want to save on my computer. An interesting fact about hard drives is that it can come both in an external state and the one that you put in your PC. For example, I bought an IPad a month ago, and I really wanted more space on it, that way it would not get filled as fast. I then got an external hard drive. You just have to connect it to the IPad with a wire and there you go, more space.
In conclusion, the computer is one of the many technological items that is greatly relied on today. One can do all their learning, their research, and even online shopping on it. I am typing this on my computer right now as well. The computer is hands down, one of my prized possessions, which is also one of the main reasons I bought the separate parts and built it myself. It can clearly be seen that as time passes on, the computer will become more technologically advanced and probably will become more portable, excluding the laptop. Eventually people will start to do all their shopping online and computers will gradually become a necessity.
